Fine Arts students who are specializing in Drama &Theatre at the Department of Fine ARts,University of Peradeniya has to engage in theatre directing as part of their practical training. Student directors,Samudura Rathnayake, Asanka Rathnayake, V.V.Vithanage and Nalin N.Kariyawasam has selected and directed four scenes from Punchi palingu rena, Henre Jayasena's Sinhala translation of the glass menagerie of Tennessee Williams. Although there are seven scenes in the play, above mentioned directors selected only no two,five,six and seven.Since this was a learning experience Mr.Pujitha de Mel was the supervisor for the directing process.
This piece that was done in "Site Specific" form, was performed in the building of the Department of Fine Arts, University of Peradeniya. Directors had selected two locations of the ground floor and two locations of the ground floor and two locations of the first floor as the performance spaces.
There are four main characters in the play. A narrator and different signals were used to interconnect the different scenes. Actress who played mother's role in one of the scenes played the role of the daughter in another scene. Ancillary were used according to the context of the play and to the theatrical space.
As this piece was inspired by Site Specific theatre practice, the audience may be limited according to the theatrical space.
